Second London trust goes live with new Pharmacy Stock Control system supplied by BT and JAC
St Mary's NHS Trust, located in Paddington, has become the second NHS trust in London to go live with JAC Computer Services Ltd.'s pharmacy management system offered by BT as an additional service through the National Programme for Information Technology, which is being delivered by NHS Connecting for Health.
The system was supplied to St Mary's by BT - the Local Service Provider for London under the National Programme - which awarded JAC the contract in 2005.
Anne Tyrrell, Chief Pharmacist at St Mary's NHS Trust, explained: "In the average hospital around 7,000 prescribed doses are given to patients every day. JAC makes it much easier for us to manage those complex demands and, combined with other developments, will free up pharmacy staff to support colleagues and patients on the wards."
According to Phil Jones, Director of ICT at St Mary's NHS Trust, one of the major reasons why JAC's solution was selected was because it provided interfaces to auto dispensing robots which the Trust is also currently implementing.
"Our existing system was old, had limited functionality, particularly on financial reporting and was reaching the end of its life," explained Phil. "We had been informed that this system was not going to be maintained by the supplier and that gave us the opportunity to evaluate our long-term objectives and select a solution that would meet our current and future requirements."
The JAC pharmacy stock control system enables St. Mary's to interface a dispensing robot as recommended by the Audit Commissions report, a Spoonful of Sugar - Medicines Management in NHS Hospitals. In addition the JAC solution delivers a number of other core benefits including improvements in the control of drug costs and real-time medicines information at the time of dispensing, as well as providing the basis for e-prescribing.
"We are proud to be at the forefront in deploying integrated pharmacy solutions across the Trust," continued Phil Jones. "I would like to thank, not only our pharmacy staff for their hard work which ensured that this key project was implemented smoothly and on time, but also the staff of BT, the London NHS Connecting for Health team and JAC for their significant efforts in meeting our timetable."
Robert Tysall-Blay, Chief Executive of JAC, said "This is the second system to go live in London in 3 months as part of our work with BT and the NHS Connecting for Health strategy which further reinforces our position as the UK market leader in pharmacy management solutions. We are already planning the delivery of further systems to Trusts in London."
Marek Stepniak, Director of Business Development at BT's health division, said: "BT provides industry leading solutions to meet the business needs of Trusts. Our close relationship with JAC means that we have been able to meet the pharmacy stock control requirements of St. Mary's NHS Trust on time and to budget and we anticipate further roll-outs of JAC's Pharmacy Management system over the coming months."
